The importance of finding the right regulation for AI

    10:15 - 10:45 CEST Geneva

Now is the time to build Equality Machines. At a time when AI and digital platforms are under fire, Orly Lobel, a renowned tech policy scholar, defends technology as a powerful tool we can harness to achieve equality and a better future. Lobel invites us to collectively steer automation to do better and to direct the course of technology according to our most fundamental values. With insights from a broad range of fields, Lobel shows that digital technology frequently has a comparative advantage over humans in detecting discrimination, correcting historical exclusions, subverting long-standing stereotypes, and addressing the world’s thorniest problems: climate, poverty, injustice, literacy, accessibility, speech, health, and safety. Lobel’s vivid examples—from labor markets to dating markets—provide powerful evidence for how we can harness technology for good. But to do so, Lobel shows, we must overcome a mindset and fallacies that pervade our current tech policies and the ways we talk about AI.

    10:50 - 11:05 CEST Geneva

Can AI help humanize health, or even make humans more human? This talk explores emotion-driven AI solutions centered on the core values of empathy and compassion towards good health and wellbeing for all. Youth innovators share their perspectives on the potential and outlook for empathy-based AI applications.

    11:10 - 11:25 CEST Geneva

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can not only assist law enforcement agencies in solving crimes but is becoming increasingly crucial particularly in child sexual exploitation and abuse cases, where vast amounts of material heavily burden individual officers. Examples of AI tools and techniques to support law enforcement in these investigations will be discussed, as well as the AI for Safer Children Global Hub – an online platform with a catalogue of over 70 of these tools – and trainings which bring together a community united in combating this crime with innovative methods.

    ROBOTICS STAGE

    10:45-11:30 CEST Geneva
    10:50-11:05 CEST Geneva

As we transition from the era of task-specific Narrow AIs to the next phase of Artificial General Intelligences, it's important that our early-stage AGI systems are not only focused on compassionate tasks involving close interactions with diverse humans, but also that the infrastructure and architectures of these AGIs embody principles of diversity.   Cognitive architectures that integrate representations and algorithms from multiple paradigms, such as neural-symbolic systems, provide a more robust foundation for understanding the richness of human value systems across various contexts.   Decentralized infrastructures that (using blockchain and other tools) avoid giving excessive power to any specific parties provide arenas in which a breadth of AI agents can compete, cooperate and coalesce into emergent networks, incorporating ideas and values from all aspects of global human society and culture.   Via pursuing this sort of approach rather than e.g. single-architecture, single-company avenues toward AGI, we can maximize both the intelligence and the wisdom and human benefit of the AGI systems we create and educate.

In a world where our lives and decisions are profoundly influenced by AI outcomes, it is crucial to include and actively engage those who are often underrepresented or excluded from design to deployment, from concept to regulations. This inclusive approach is essential for creating representative and inclusive outcomes. Throughout history, artists have consistently been at the forefront of pushing conceptual boundaries, challenging orthodoxies, and expanding the scope of human imagination.

To disrupt creativity in a new way, we need to combine diverse domain expertise with cutting-edge AI technology. This combination will revolutionize the creative process. It encompasses not only what fuels our technology but also how it impacts artists. By incorporating inclusive design principles into our approach, we can ensure that creativity is accessible to all. Additionally, we must proactively protect artists' intellectual properties while providing them with tools that ignite imagination and inspire new creative ideas.

    12:10 - 12:35 CEST Geneva

Increasingly, multidisciplinary artists and creative technologists are guiding the bleeding edge of emerging technologies, and establishing crucial new narratives for wider society. The panel brings together all the 4 artists from the first season of The Artistic Intelligence Visionary Initiative, a project by AI for Good, ITU & Artist Harry Yeff, which seeks out visionary artists who create works that aid our understanding of A.I. and guide our evolving relationships with innovation and culture.

Twenty-four years ago, Ray Kurzweil predicted computers would reach human-level intelligence by 2029. This was met with great concern and criticism. In the past six months technology experts have come around to agree with him. According to Kurzweil, over the next two decades, AI is going to change what it means to be human. We are going to invent new means of expression that will soar past human language, art, and science of today. All of the concepts that we rely on to give meaning to our lives, including death itself, will be transformed.
