Bethlehem Terefe

Bethlehem Terefe is a Master of Social Work student at the School of Social Policy and Practice and a Research Fellow at the SAFELab at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to coming to the University of Pennsylvania, Bethlehem attended Cornell University where she majored in Human Development with a minor in Business. Through her coursework and involvement in various extracurricular activities, she grew an interest in mental health awareness, especially amongst marginalized communities. After earning her B.S., she spent her gap years working in community-engaged research serving vulnerable populations, before pursuing graduate studies. During that time, she contributed to two NICHD-funded R01 research projects: one examining the generational ramifications of childhood adversity and another exploring how lifelong stress impacts maternal and infant health. Her primary interests lie in working with marginalized communities, particularly among youth/young adults, immigrant, and BIPOC populations, to address mental health concerns through clinical practice, research, policy, and advocacy. Given the rapid advancement of technology, she believes that it’s imperative to leverage these tools responsibly to better support at risk communities, while actively working to minimize the harms of technology, in pursuit of a more equitable society.
