Session Description: Artificial intelligence is often framed through the lens of large, resource‑intensive models and advanced computing power. Yet many of the most impactful applications for developing countries are emerging from small AI—lightweight, efficient tools that can run on everyday devices such as smartphones and function effectively in low‑connectivity environments. This session will explore how small AI can help address real‑world challenges today, including improving health services, supporting agricultural productivity, strengthening education delivery, and enabling new economic opportunities.

Drawing on practical examples from the World Bank Group’s work with governments, innovators, and development partners, the discussion will highlight how small AI solutions can expand access to information in real time, enable earlier and faster crisis prediction, support frontline workers, and enhance service delivery in resource‑constrained settings. The session will also examine the enabling conditions needed to achieve impact. Panelists will discuss how investments in data systems, digital infrastructure, skills development, and open innovation ecosystems can help countries unlock AI‑driven growth, while policy and regulatory frameworks support secure, trusted, and effective deployment from the outset.

By shifting the focus from AI capabilities to practical, people‑focused applications, this session will demonstrate how small AI can strengthen productivity, support job creation, and contribute to measurable development outcomes.
