Patrick Ebel

Patrick Ebel is a remote sensing researcher utilizing machine learning for large-scale Earth observation and system modeling. He works as a scientist within the Flood Forecasting department at Google Research, predicting hydrometeorological hazards to promote resilience and prevent natural disasters.

Patrick is a core member of the Working Group on Communications for the UN Global Initiative on Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions. The working group specializes in the assessment and development of standards for the use of AI in disaster management, specifically in communications. Among its recent activities are the organization of a currently ongoing webinar series on Human-Centered AI.

Previously, Patrick completed a PhD in Data Science for Earth Observation at the Technical University of Munich, combining computer vision with spaceborne remote sensing. He also served as an Internal Research Fellow at the European Space Agency Centre for Earth Observation, where he developed and supported disaster mitigation, rapid mapping, and relief efforts through international and intergovernmental collaborations, as well as with space industry businesses and startups. Patrick is recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer at leading conferences such as NeurIPS and CVPR, and his work has received several prestigious honors, including the ISPRS Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing and CVPR EarthVision Best Paper awards, as well as the quadrennially awarded U.V. Helava Award in Remote Sensing.
