Google Earth Engine combines data catalogue and processing capabilities, allowing the user to access vast amount of geospatial data and apply custom created processing scripts. The focus of the workshop will be to apply machine learning algorithms for analyzing deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon using earth observation data, in particular multispectral images from ESA Sentinel and NASA Landsat missions. The workshop will give a general introduction to the Google Earth Engine cloud-computing service. Along basic functionalities we demonstrate how to browse and access the petabyte data catalogue. We also introduce the basic JavaScript in order for the user to be able to manipulate and handle data processing at a certain level. Going further into the workshop we will present how to compute indices such as NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and to analyze in a time-series manner. All the showcased steps will eventually lead to a preprocessed set of scenes which will be further used to apply a machine learning algorithm to quantify forest loss over time. Finally, the resulted products will be evaluate against an external dataset.

This live event includes a 30-minute networking event hosted on the AI for Good Neural Network. This is your opportunity to ask questions, interact with the panelists and participants and build connections with the AI for Good community.
