    AI for Good Impact India marks the inaugural regional event dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusivity within the AI for Good landscape. The event aims to provide a collaborative platform for knowledge sharing and the promotion of AI technologies that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    The event will feature keynotes, panels, pitching competitions, and hands-on sessions designed to showcase innovative AI solutions and promote robust telecommunications frameworks and AI standards. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with experts, share insights, and explore the latest technologies, ensuring they can effectively contribute to and benefit from the global AI ecosystem.

    AI for Good Impact India will coincide with the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24) from 15-24 October 2024 and the India Mobile Congress 2024, from 15-18 October 2024.

    This panel will explore the latest global efforts in AI governance, bringing together leaders from governments, industry, academia. The discussion aims to transform dialogue into actionable strategies for shaping the future of AI regulation and policy.

    As deepfakes and synthetic media technology evolve at an unprecedented pace, they present both revolutionary creative possibilities and significant challenges. This keynote explores the profound impact of AI on multimedia authenticity, from viral misinformation to the erosion of trust in digital content by delving into ethical considerations, and strategies for securing the integrity of digital content. Join us as we discuss how to navigate this new digital landscape while safeguarding the truth in an age of new creative possibilities.

    This panel will explore how Artificial Intelligence presents transformative opportunities for advancing the United Nations mission. From enhancing humanitarian efforts to optimizing sustainable development, AI can help tackle global challenges more effectively. Leveraging AI responsibly will be key to driving innovation while ensuring inclusivity, ethics, and fairness on the global stage.

    ITU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific supports the development of AI standards, policies, frameworks and initiatives that mainstream gender equality and social inclusion in Southeast Asia. Through capacity building, information sharing, and technical assistance, ITU Regional Office works to ensure that AI development and deployment in the region is inclusive and that AI-associated risks like bias and discrimination are mitigated, especially with regard to women and vulnerable groups in society.

Safiya has a bachelor’s in Anthropology from Sarah Lawrence College, where she continued her community involvement and interned with the UN. After graduation, she co-founded two companies in India before transitioning back to research and joining 3ie. Safiya furthered her research career with an MSc in Evaluation and Applied Research from Claremont Graduate University, during which she worked as an independent evaluation consultant for various international organizations. Later, she joined STiR Education where she led research and evaluation.     A distinguished engineer, leader, and diplomat; multilingual standardization expert and holder of 23 patents, Tunisian born Dr Bilel Jamoussi is the Deputy to the Director and Chief of Telecommunication Standardization Policy Department at the ITU Standardization Bureau (TSB) in Geneva, Switzerland. His primary mission is to establish international standards to promote universal, meaningful connectivity and champion sustainable digital transformation. He also aims to intensify industry engagement, ensure inclusivity in standards development and adoption, and bolster cooperation with other standardization bodies. Additionally, he is committed to leading in emerging tech discussions, building strategic partnerships, and pursuing organizational excellence. Previously, he was the Chief of the Study Groups Department of ITU Standardization Bureau (TSB) from 2010 and until 31 August 2023. He has led the coordination of the bureau’s standards moving activities into a new era characterized by digital transformation that needs an increased collaboration with vertical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, utility, and banking. His innovative approach has served as a catalyst to launch new standards initiatives related to emerging technologies such as IoT, Blockchain, AI and Quantum, attracting a new wave of memberships from non-traditional players. A standout accomplishment of Dr Jamoussi is his effort in bridging the telecommunications and financial sectors. Through this, he paved the way for the creation of digital payments guidelines and standards that aim to foster financial inclusion on a global scale. Key achievements under his tenure have been important new standards while effectively managing staff by recruiting new talent, improving gender balance, delivering new work methods, and staying within budget. Prior to 2010, he worked in the private sector for 15 years and held senior executive positions such as Director of Standards for Nortel. In this role he participated in over 90 standards making bodies worldwide. In the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), he authored a number of Internet standards. As an IEEE Senior Member, he was elected to the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Board of Governors and the IEEE-SA Corporate Advisory Group. He holds a BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, USA. In addition to his many accomplishments, Dr Bilel Jamoussi is a pivotal figure in the global ICT community. He is a sought-after speaker at tech events worldwide like the Global Cybersecurity Forum (GCF), often taking the stage as a keynote speaker or panellist. His expertise and insights are in high demand by media outlets such as Financial Times, resulting in frequent interviews, podcast features, and media appearances. Bilel has lived in Tunisia, Canada, USA, and Switzerland, giving him a unique global viewpoint. He is fluent in Arabic, French, and English and speaks some Spanish and German.

    Doreen Bogdan-Martin took office as Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 1 January 2023. Ms Bogdan-Martin was elected as ITU’s first-ever female Secretary-General by Member States at the Union’s Plenipotentiary Conference in Bucharest, Romania. Ms Bogdan-Martin was previously the Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau. She took office on 1 January 2019, becoming the first woman in ITU history to hold one of the organization’s top elected management positions. <div>Ms Bogdan-Martin is a strategic leader with more than 30 years’ high-level experience in international and inter-governmental relations and a long history of success advising governments around the world on policy and regulatory issues.</div> <div></div> <div>From 2008-2018, she led ITU’s Strategic Planning & Membership Department. She was instrumental in establishing the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, on which she has served as Executive Director for more than a decade, and was an architect of the annual Global Symposium for Regulators, the pre-eminent global event for digital policymakers, as well as director of ITU’s first global youth summit, #BYND.     <span class="ui-provider ur b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z ab ac ae af ag ah ai aj ak" dir="ltr">Seizo Onoe took office as Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 1 January 2023.</span> Before his election as TSB Director by ITU Member States, he completed an over 30-year career with Japanese mobile operator NTT DOCOMO. In 2021, he became Executive Vice President and Chief Standardization Strategy Officer for the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Corporation and a Fellow of NTT DOCOMO, INC. From 2017, he served as NTT DOCOMO’s Chief Technology Architect and President of its subsidiary DOCOMO Technology. Between 2012 and 2017, he served as NTT DOCOMO’s Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, a Member of the Board of Directors, and Managing Director of R&D Innovation Division. Earlier, he served as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of NTT DOCOMO’s R&D Strategy Department and Managing Director of the company’s Radio Network Development Department. As TSB Director, he heads the part of ITU responsible for the coordination of technical standards and collaborative standardization processes that enable the interconnection and interoperability of information and communication technologies (ICTs) worldwide. Mr Onoe is committed to facilitating open and inclusive standardization processes, along with promoting digital technologies to address global issues, building a new ecosystem that reflects evolving technologies, and strengthening cooperation and collaboration in ICT standardization worldwide. Known in the industry as “the father of LTE” (Long-Term Evolution), he helped upgrade the wireless broadband standard for mobile devices and networks. He now aims for global outreach to bridge standardization gaps, deliver the benefits of technology widely and speedily, and ensure meaningful and affordable broadband access for everyone. Mr Onoe holds a Master’s degree in electronics from the Kyoto University Graduate School of Engineering.

    Tomas Lamanauskas is Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, elected at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference of 2022, and taking up duties as of January 2023. His 25 years of experience spans across sectors of telecoms and digital policy, regulation and strategy, stemming from executive level positions in agencies, companies, and organizations across Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean and the Pacific region. As Deputy Secretary-General of ITU, Tomas focuses on the financial sustainability and operational excellence of the organization. He also works to raise the digital industry’s ambition in fighting the climate crisis through the Green Digital Action initiative and promotes investments into the digital infrastructure as well as digital resilience through the Digital Infrastructure Investment Initiative and other efforts. Additionally, Tomas contributes to the global efforts to harness the opportunities and mitigate challenges of new technologies, in particular Artificial Intelligence, including through his role as a co-chair of the United Nations Inter-Agency Working Group on AI. He is also playing a key role in ensuring ITU’s support to other UN-wide development and governance efforts, including through the World Summit of the Information Society process and membership at the Operational Steering Committee of the UN Joint SDG Fund. Tomas holds Master’s Degrees in Public Administration (Harvard), Leadership and Strategy (London Business School), Telecommunications Regulation and Policy (The University of the West Indies) and Law (Vilnius University).

Scindia has been recently appointed as the Union Minister of Communications; and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Government of India. He is a six-term Member of Parliament, which includes five terms in the Lok Sabha (2002-04, 2004-09, 2009-14, 2014-19, 2024-2029), and one term in the Rajya Sabha (2020-2024) representing the state of Madhya Pradesh. During the Lok Sabha 2024 elections and Vidhan Sabha 2023 elections, he was appointed as the star campaigner for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state of Madhya Pradesh. He is also the Member of the BJP Election Management Committee and the Core Committee of BJP in Madhya Pradesh. </div> <div class="ituContainer"> From 2014 to 2020 he was the Member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and from 2019-2020 as the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) he took charge for Uttar Pradesh West. From 2014-2019, he was appointed as Chief Whip of Congress in the Lok Sabha and also served as the Chairman of the Election Campaign Committee during the 2013 and 2018 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections. </div> <div class="ituContainer"> Mr. Scindia began his journey in public service in 2002. In his tenure as the Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel (from 2021 to 2024), Mr. Scindia played an instrumental role in incorporating substantial improvements in the aviation sector, enhancing connectivity and infrastructure across the country. His tenure saw initiatives aimed at modernizing airports and increasing accessibility to remote areas, thereby boosting economic growth and tourism. As Minister of Steel, Mr. Scindia has been pivotal in driving policies that strengthen the steel industry, ensuring it remains competitive on the global scale and contributes robustly to India’s economic framework. He also made dedicated efforts to boost the green steel sector in India. </div> <div class="ituContainer"> From 2007-2009, he served as the Minister of State for Telecommunications, Posts and IT; from 2009-2012 as the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, and then, from 2012-2014 as Minister of Power (Independent Charge). Mr. Scindia’s tenure as Minister of State for Telecommunications, Posts and IT ushered in the transformational Project Arrow that modernized the Indian post offices through new branding and IT-enabled procedures. In his tenure as Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, he successfully brought down transaction costs in Indian exports at various levels – right from the stage of production to the end customer. Additionally, as Minister of Power (Independent Charge), he led the establishment of a unified transmission grid network i.e. One Nation One Grid with a 6-sigma reliability system, linkages for power plants, and resolved last-mile distribution issues in collaboration with State Governments. Mr. Scindia has also been a member of Parliamentary Committees on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports; Defence; Finance; Home and External Affairs. </div> <div class="ituContainer"> Mr. Scindia completed his schooling from the Doon School, Dehradun.     Dr. Vandi Verma is a Robotics Principal Engineer and the Program Manager for Technology Infusion and Strategy Development at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. She also serves as Chief Engineer of Robotic Operations for Mars Perseverance. Until recently she was the Deputy Manager for the Mobility & Robotics section where she led JPL roboticists developing new technology for future missions and working on a variety of flight robotic missions. She has worked on Space Robotics and AI research and technology development tasks and has designed, developed, and operated rovers on Mars, the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Atacama Desert. Robotics capabilities she has worked on are in regular use on the Perseverance, and Curiosity rovers, and in human spaceflight projects. She has been engaged in robotic operations on Mars since 2008 with the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, Curiosity rover, Perseverance rover, and Ingenuity helicopter.

His primary mission is to establish international standards to promote universal, meaningful connectivity and champion sustainable digital transformation. He also aims to intensify industry engagement, ensure inclusivity in standards development and adoption, and bolster cooperation with other standardization bodies. Additionally, he is committed to leading in emerging tech discussions, building strategic partnerships, and pursuing organizational excellence. Previously, he was the Chief of the Study Groups Department of ITU Standardization Bureau (TSB) from 2010 and until 31 August 2023. In 2021, he became Executive Vice President and Chief Standardization Strategy Officer for the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Corporation and a Fellow of NTT DOCOMO, INC. From 2017, he served as NTT DOCOMO’s Chief Technology Architect and President of its subsidiary DOCOMO Technology. Between 2012 and 2017, he served as NTT DOCOMO’s Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, a Member of the Board of Directors, and Managing Director of R&D Innovation Division. Earlier, he served as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of NTT DOCOMO’s R&D Strategy Department and Managing Director of the company’s Radio Network Development Department. As TSB Director, he heads the part of ITU responsible for the coordination of technical standards and collaborative standardization processes that enable the interconnection and interoperability of information and communication technologies (ICTs) worldwide. Mr Onoe is committed to facilitating open and inclusive standardization processes, along with promoting digital technologies to address global issues, building a new ecosystem that reflects evolving technologies, and strengthening cooperation and collaboration in ICT standardization worldwide.     Tomas Lamanauskas is Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, elected at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference of 2022, and taking up duties as of January 2023. His 25 years of experience spans across sectors of telecoms and digital policy, regulation and strategy, stemming from executive level positions in agencies, companies, and organizations across Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean and the Pacific region. As Deputy Secretary-General of ITU, Tomas focuses on the financial sustainability and operational excellence of the organization. He also works to raise the digital industry’s ambition in fighting the climate crisis through the Green Digital Action initiative and promotes investments into the digital infrastructure as well as digital resilience through the Digital Infrastructure Investment Initiative and other efforts. Additionally, Tomas contributes to the global efforts to harness the opportunities and mitigate challenges of new technologies, in particular Artificial Intelligence, including through his role as a co-chair of the United Nations Inter-Agency Working Group on AI.     At AQAI, we have developed an AI-powered platform to monitor hyperlocal air quality, with a focus on PM2.5 levels, particularly in regions with vulnerable populations. By leveraging pre-trained models and remote sensing technologies, our platform providing precise pollution estimates at a hyperlocal level. It is designed to support humanitarian organizations, governments, and health institutions in tracking pollution levels and understanding the impact of air pollution on health outcomes, especially respiratory conditions. With support from the UNICEF Venture Fund, we have implemented the data pipeline and AI models for Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in collaboration with the Breathe Mongolia - Clean Air Coalition, with further plans to scale.

    Sri has been associated with the IEEE since 2012 focusing on developing key standardisation programs in emerging areas focusing on building end-to-end trustworthy devices and systems with emphasis on cybersecurity, identity and privacy through his practice. Sri also heads the standardization efforts for the Asia Pacific region and leads Business Operations for IEEE’s office in India. Sri and his team in India also drive the IEEE Blended Learning Program (BLP) initiative, an eLearning platform, focused on bridging skills gap for students and lateral skilling of industry professionals. Prior to joining IEEE, Sri was associated with Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (formerly Motorola Inc.) for 17 years, managing a global Electronic Design Automation R&D team. Sri received the Accellera Technical Excellence Award in 2009 for his leadership and contributions to design automation standardisation. Sri holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Madras University, India and Master’s degree in Electrical Communication from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India.
