Top Winners at the AI for Good Innovate for Impact Shanghai

Innovate for Impact

AI has great potential to benefit society, but actions must be taken to ensure it addresses diverse needs and is built to encompass the diversity of users and populations. With growing development of AI, the disparities that separate segments of society and nations into those who have and those who do not have digital access, skills, and knowledge, may lead to inequity in digital use, opportunities, and benefits of AI.

We can’t meet the challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) without closing the digital divide, especially on AI.

That is why AI for Good launched a new project, Innovate for Impact, to recognize and facilitate the sharing of AI applications and expertise worldwide. This project aims to showcase AI applications to drive the achievement of SDGs, which was approved by the Steering Committee of China’s donation in 2024.

In February 2024, we issued two open calls simultaneously: a call for AI use cases, and a call for AI scholars.

The project received 219 use case submissions from 38 countries and 118 scholar applications from 41 countries. The use cases were evaluated based on clarity, SDG alignment, AI’s impact on SDGs and future work.

At the recent event World AI Conference in Shanghai, we awarded the top 12 winners to help bridge the knowledge gap and promote experience sharing on AI applications. At this event, we helped to foster collaboration and networking among participants, including policy makers, academia, industry, and civil society.
