AI in Aviation

During the past years there has been a significant increase of innovation in aviation.  Many of these are realizing use cases that are delivering on the SDGs from the air. Whether it is internet from balloons, or drones providing medication or using new aviation platforms to collect data previously only available through satellites. Underlying this boom is a series of new technologies included increase automation -including the initial use of AI. The AI in Aviation panel will discuss some of the more exciting developments in this regard and also on the regulatory approaches that are being developed.

    Mrs Maimuna Taal-Diack is the Airworthiness Technical Officer at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). She Joined the Operational Safety Section of the Air Navigation Bureau in September 2015. She is an Aerospace Engineer and a holder of an Airframe and Powerplant Engineer License from the US Federal Aviation Administration. Mrs Diack has extensive knowledge of ICAO provisions related to the airworthiness of aircraft and has over 20 years of experience in the field of Civil Aviation Safety oversight related to continuing airworthiness. She served in various position within the Gambian Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA and rose to the post of Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Authority where she was responsible for the full range of aviation regulatory activities. Maimuna also served as Consultant and Adviser with ICAO and is currently the secretary of the Airworthiness Panel.

    Paul Bosman is with Eurocontrol since more than 25 years and currently the Head of (ATM) Infrastructure Division. Working in close cooperation with all ATM stakeholders this division manages & supports European ATM/CNS planning, deployment, reporting and monitoring programmes digitising the SES European Sky. He received his B.Eng. in Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering from Carleton University in 2016. As Head of Innovation, Marco leads the Innovation team at Searidge Technologies.  Marco and the Innovation team constantly research, advance, and apply the latest technology to help ANSPs and airports improve their operational safety and efficiency. Marco is also tasked with the management of key programs and partnerships at Searidge, which bring novel technology solutions into operation at ANSPs and airports globally.

    With 30 years of experience in the air traffic management industry Andy Taylor has lead, developed and delivered innovative ATC solutions for global customers to increase airport capacity and operational performance. Throughout his career, Andy has capitalised on emerging trends in the air traffic market and related technologies to maximise operational value to current and future customers. As Chief Solutions Officer, Andy works across both NATS and Searidge Technologies, following the acquisition of a 50% stake in the market leader in Digital Tower solutions. He is responsible for the joint development of the partnership’s Digital Tower capabilities and delivery models.

    Jean-Philip has been in the innovation space for over than 10 years and for the last 7 years being actively involved in product creation and improvement, open innovation, high technologies scouting & advisory as well as high technologies integration management. Passionate about technologies, Jean-Philip co-founded a startup in the wearables sector focused on an artificial intelligence (AI) platform using the wearables incoming live data to extract different human states. Currently manager of the open innovation program at CENTECH (Collision Lab), he oversees several projects including technologies like AI, IoT, 5G, AR / VR, drones, Big Data to name a few. He finds himself at its best to target the needs of corporate clients and lead the project vision beyond the realization of the PoC (Proof of Concept) created within the program.
