    IF Flyer Shell

    We seek solutions that will unlock a step change towards the Decarbonization of the Agriculture and Forestry sector. Ideally, such a system is open for and acknowledged by all stakeholders, both peers and suppliers. For this call for solutions, we are looking for creative and robust approaches to support the following challenges:

    • Novel data and technology driven business models which can help incentivize farmers to show demonstrable greenhouse gas emissions reduction;
    • Cost effective technologies which bolster performance of cold storage systems and transport logistics; and
    • Data driven technologies for measurement, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions.

    CONTEXT

    The Agriculture and Forestry sector plays a critical role in curbing the impact of climate change. It is both a significant contributor but also part of the solution as forests and soils act as natural sinks for carbon. The sector accounts for 27% of the greenhouse gas emissions globally caused for examples by enteric fermentation, manure management & synthetic fertilisers.

    Shell’s Agriculture and Forestry business will collaborate with key stakeholders within the industry to support decarbonisation pathways by offering purposeful and sustainable solutions.

    The scope and pace of change required to decarbonise the Agriculture and Forestry sector is unprecedented. As part of Shell’s target to become a net-zero energy business by 2050, in step with society and to meet several of the SDGs articulated by the UN, we are keen to seek innovative solutions that will help to accelerate this sectors’ transition.

    WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

    Solution that can capture and address any of the three areas articulated above, and meet the following conditions of deployment

    • Low maintenance, highly automated solutions;
    • Easy to scale solutions, allowing automated growth as the deployment network grows;
    • Self-sustaining and simple to use solutions where benefits outweigh significantly potential costs;
    • Automatically attracts participants to join; and
    • Easy to test through a Proof of Concept.

     IN SCOPE

    • Preferably an open solution that enables peers and suppliers to collectively leverage data across the industry.
    • The list of technology levers which could be potential leveraged, but not be limited to, are:
      • Data analytics and Artificial Intelligence;
      • Proven deployed principles of Machine Learning across Industry;
      • Data technologies which are “quick to scale”;
      • Simplicity to use and deploy; and
      • Extendable to other input parameters when valuable for the industry.
    • Allows for incorporation of unstructured data. Examples: illustrations, pictures, drawings, clips.
    • Solutions that use technologies boosting automation, uniform governance, and user experience.
    • Intelligent curation algorithms

    OUT OF SCOPE

    • Proposals on or related to policies & regulations.
    • Use of restricted access data or data that is not in the public domain.
    • Including commercial data (e.g., price)
    • Information that cannot be independently verified.
    • Consultancy type of projects (we are looking for a technical solution and partner that can turn the proposal into reality)
    • The use of obsolete technologies or niche technologies that cannot be (self-)sustained

    NOTES

    • This document constitutes an offer to make an offer and shall be subject to terms and conditions as prescribed by Shell.
    • The pitching session for the said solutions will be organised in accordance with all other events hosted by the AI for Good Innovation Factory organized by the International Telecommunication Union.
    • Any information submitted as part of the process must contain only non-confidential data and information at this stage.
    • The Innovation Factory jury will review proposals jointly with Shell GameChanger team and Shell experts.
    • A prize money of $20K USD will be granted by Shell’s GameChanger programme to the start-up  winning the Innovation Factory pitching session. The winning solution will be presented at Grand Final Demo Day of the AI for Good Innovation Factory in December 2022.
    • The winners of the Innovation Factory pitching session will also be given opportunities to access to potential investors and seek partnerships with the interested UN partners.
    • The winners may be presenting with an opportunity from Shell’s GameChanger programme to progress a “proof of concept” in a phased approach over a period of up to 06 months.
    • Further development may be supported and or facilitated by Shell depending on the overall outcome of the winning start-up participating in Shell’s GameChanger programme.

    *GameChanger criteria

    1. Novel – Is the idea fundamentally different and unproven in this industry?
    2. Valuable – Could the idea create substantial new value if it works?
    3. Doable – Is there a plan to prove the concept quickly and affordably?
    4. Relevant – Is the idea relevant to the future of energy?
    5. Scalability – If your solution is proven, how scalable is it?
