As robots move beyond industrial settings into homes and personal environments, technical performance alone is no longer sufficient. A more fundamental question emerges: how can machines understand and respond to human needs in a way that builds trust, dignity, and long-term engagement? This session explores a shift from intelligence-driven systems to empathy-driven design. Drawing on Zeroth’s philosophy of “radical empathy” and symbiotic interaction, we argue that empathy, trust, and emotional intelligence must become core system capabilities, not optional features. Through real-world examples in embodied robotics, we demonstrate how machines can perceive emotional cues, adapt to individual users, and develop persistent memory over time. These capabilities unlock new possibilities across domains such as eldercare, education, and companionship, where human-centered interaction is essential. Ultimately, this talk reframes “AI for Good” not as a question of more advanced intelligence, but of more human-centered intelligence, where technology supports not only what people do, but how they feel, connect, and live.
