AI is a game changer. Industrial applications amplified or powered by AI have the potential to transform economies. Yet a hard question this workshop takes on, is how that conversation translates into industrial outcomes in the places that need them most. The answer requires a two-pronged approach. Putting AI to work in industry, where it meets physical processes, machines, and people on the factory floor through embodied technology such as robotics, cobots, and AI-enabled production systems. The connectivity gap, however, needs closing so that industrial AI is not the privilege of well-connected economies but a tool available wherever production happens. Embodied AI without connectivity is a stranded asset. Connectivity without industrial application is unrealised potential. UNIDO’s Centres of Excellence sit precisely at this intersection. Each CoE is a working environment where embodied AI is deployed, where connectivity is engineered into the shop floor, and where local talent is trained to operate and improve both. CoEs in Barbados, Shanghai, and India are now starting to deliver measurable results, including to build the necessary skills across all sectors. Removing bottlenecks to education, infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology can only be unblocked by a public–private coalition. This workshop launches the next layer of that architecture: a new dedicated emphasis on building human capacity and an AI-ready workforce that industrial AI ultimately depends on. The launch is grounded in a live “virtual CoE round” that brings the network into the room, and a private-sector panel, e.g. IBM and others that responds in real time to what the CoEs put on the table.
