Digital environments increasingly shape how young people learn, socialize, and understand themselves. Artificial intelligence is now embedded in these environments – from generative AI tools to algorithmic moderation and digital health applications. While these technologies offer opportunities to support well-being and expand access to mental health resources of children and adolescents, they also raise profound ethical questions about their autonomy, privacy, manipulation, and potential psychological harm.

This fireside chat will explore the intersection between youth mental health, digital environments, and AI ethics, examining how AI-driven platforms influence youths emotional development, social interactions, and exposure to risk – from algorithmic amplification of harmful content to emerging AI companions and mental-health chatbots.

The firseside chat will outline key ethical principles and governance priorities to ensure that digital platforms and AI systems affecting young people are designed and deployed in ways that protect dignity, mental health and well-being, and human rights. It will also highlight how policymakers, developers and educators can work together to promote a digital environment that actively supports youth flourishing in a safe space.
