Yitian Xiao

Dr. Yitian Xiao is Chief Scientist of the Deep-Time Digital Earth (DDE) Zhejiang International Research Center and serves as Senior Technical Consultant to Zhejiang Lab and the Yunqi Academy of Engineering. He previously served as Senior Corporate Expert and Chief Artificial Intelligence Scientist at Sinopec Group and earlier held senior scientific and technical leadership roles at ExxonMobil.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Dr. Xiao has integrated advanced computational technologies—including quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, reservoir simulation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence—with first-principles scientific approaches to address complex challenges in Earth and energy sciences.
His current work focuses on AI for Science, AI-native Earth system intelligence, and the development of advanced geoscience foundation models and autonomous scientific workflows. He has played a leading role in promoting the responsible, open, and transparent development of scientific AI systems, including international governance, ethical oversight, and interdisciplinary collaboration frameworks for AI applications in Earth and environmental sciences.

Dr. Xiao is also a key contributor to the development of GeoGPT and related global AI-for-Science initiatives aimed at accelerating scientific discovery, improving sustainability, and advancing international collaboration through trustworthy and responsible artificial intelligence.
