Wafa Ben Hassine

Wafa Ben-Hassine works at the intersection of human rights and emerging technologies. She serves as Chief, Digital Technologies and Human Rights Section, at the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), leading the office’s work on AI governance and emerging tech. Previously, Wafa was Director of Programs and Policy at Omidyar Network, a private philanthropic foundation, where she led a number of portfolios on encrypted messaging, online safety, and AI governance, and co-created Humanity AI, a funder coalition supporting civil society in shaping the future of AI. Earlier, she was MENA Policy Manager at Access Now and worked with OHCHR and UNESCO on human rights online. She is a licensed attorney in the State of New York, a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Information Integrity, and an advisory board member of Library Futures. Wafa was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
