Nicola D’Ascenzo
Prof. D’Ascenzo is a physicist. He studied Physics at the University of Pisa and graduated in Physics and the University of Hamburg. He has been Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology from 2015 to 2022. In 2019 he co-founded the Department of Medical Physics and Engineering at the Istituto Neurologico Mediterraneo NEUROMED I.R.C.C.S. and since 2021 he is the scientific coordinator of the “Digital Imaging Multimodal Platform” DIMP Eurobioimaging node. In April 2022 he has been appointed full professor of the department of Electronics Engineering and Information Science at the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei. His core research is the development of new digital sensors strategies for Positron Emission Tomography and their application to frontier fields, such as real-time dynamic digital plant PET imaging. The activity of his research group ranges from the physical modelling of medical physics phenomena, to the related computational aspects, to novel strategies for digital sensor and systems development, to novel digital biomarkers generation and validation with digital technologies. Within the GATEKEEPER consortium his team has developed a new A.I.-based platform for the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease based on PET imaging and blood biomarkers, taking advantage of the high performance computing Ezmeral infrastructure by Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
