AI Policy – Challenges, actors and diplomacy

      This high-level briefing, organized by UNITAR, will offer a foundational understanding of the global AI Policy landscape. The session will explore institutional dynamics, emerging norms, and the role of diplomacy in shaping multilateral AI policy. Participants will examine the implications of competing Policy models, consider the strategic dimensions of digital sovereignty, and reflect on the diplomatic tools available to close Policy gaps and foster responsible AI development.

       

      Learning Objectives:

      By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

      • Prepare participants to contribute to the AI for Good Summit, by deepening their understanding of institutional dynamics, emerging norms, and the diplomatic tools available to influence the AI Policy agenda;
      • Examine the role of diplomacy in addressing coordination gaps, ethical tensions, and geopolitical risks in AI Policy, and identify concrete avenues for state-level engagement in multilateral and multi-stakeholder processes;
      • Support participants to interpret and respond to the major Policy models shaping global AI policy, recognising how different regulatory approaches reflect broader political, legal, and strategic priorities across various regions.
