Nic Carey

Nic Carey is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at the Autodesk Robotics Laboratory. She obtained her PhD in Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics from the Australian National University, with a focus on biomimetic control and perception. Since then, she has conducted research at the intersection of robotics and ethology at the Centre for Cognitive Interaction Technology at Bielefeld University and the Designing Emergence Laboratory at Harvard University, using robotics to investigate and analyze complex biological and ecological super-systems. She specializes in developing novel sensing technologies and control strategies for robots in unstructured environments, but has also published extensively on the ethics and impact of robots in healthcare.

Nic’s work at Autodesk includes examining the role of robotics and AI in sustainable development and ecological conservation. She currently collaborates with several research and industry groups on developing and prototyping systems for monitoring and restoring marine environments, and acts as a technical expert in mechatronics for the Autodesk Foundation’s Pro Bono Consulting initiative.
