Laxmi Thapa

Laxmi holds an undergraduate degree in Geomatics Engineering from Kathmandu University, Nepal. With nearly a decade of experience, she has served as a Geomatics Engineer (Survey Officer) in the Survey Department under the Government of Nepal. During this time, she contributed to various projects related to land administration, specializing in cadastral surveying/mapping, capacity building of surveyors through GIS-based field trainings, and improving public service delivery using GIS/Remote Sensing and open-source technologies. Likewise, she has been actively engaged in organising GIS-related conferences and events in Nepal.

Laxmi pursued her master’s degree in Geospatial Technologies through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Degree Program, studying at three universities across Portugal, Germany, and Spain. She was also involved in teaching the course on the application of GIS and Remote Sensing to the students of Forestry and Natural Resources Management at Tribhuvan University, Nepal, during the years 2021 and 2022. Additionally, she has been engaged in conducting multidisciplinary research focusing on the use of geospatial technologies for earth observation. Currently, she is a first year PhD student at Aston University, UK researching on the use of emerging technologies for the Disaster Management System in Smart Cities.

Beyond academia, Laxmi serves as the President of the ISPRS Student Consortium (ISPRS SC, 2022-2026). She is actively involved in capacity-building initiatives and events that facilitate knowledge-sharing and networking among youths interested in Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, and GIS on a global scale. With a keen interest in fostering the development of geospatial education, she is also engaged in ISPRS SC’s collaborative activity to standardize AI and enhance the skills of youth having a background in geospatial studies with AI.
