John Colmey

John Colmey is a global sustainability strategist and an early leader in applying artificial intelligence to climate, restoration and sustainable development across the Global South. As Senior Director at CIFOR-ICRAF and Senior Strategic Adviser and Co-Founder of the Global Landscapes Forum, he brings together science, technology, finance and storytelling to accelerate landscape-level solutions and strengthen the visibility of communities working on the frontlines of climate and nature action.

Between 2013 and 2025, John helped build GLF into the world’s largest platform on sustainable landscapes, connecting governments, researchers, financial actors, civil society, youth networks and local communities across 175 countries. Under his leadership, GLF secured more than €60 million in funding, built a network of 35 Charter Members, and expanded its role as a global convening and innovation platform.

John is closely involved in the development of Rio Changemakers, a major initiative with the Government of Luxembourg that uses AI-enabled, science-guided infrastructure to connect high-integrity climate, nature and community-led projects with global investors. His current work focuses on AI-enabled platforms, trusted data, Earth observation, project visibility and investment matchmaking for climate and nature finance.

Previously, John served for more than a decade as Communications Director at CIFOR, advising four Director-Generals and helping elevate forests and landscapes in global policy arenas. Earlier, he spent 12 years as a correspondent across Asia, including as TIME’s Hong Kong Bureau Chief, and later served as Senior Vice President at PCCW in Hong Kong.
