Joana Santos

Joana Santos

Joana Santos is Director of Data Science at ComplyAdvantage, where she leads AI and machine learning strategy in the RegTech domain, aligning advanced analytics and agentic AI with product innovation and measurable business impact. She leads an international Data Science function and, since 2026, has expanded remit across Data Governance and Investigations.

Joana is a member of the AI for Good Steering Committee, contributing to the evaluation of high-impact AI initiatives and providing technical guidance on scalability, innovation, and real-world application.

Prior to ComplyAdvantage, Joana spent more than eight years at Microsoft in progressively senior data science roles. She led enterprise AI engagements across industries, with a focus on large-scale AI systems and large language models, while advising organisations on data strategy and responsible AI adoption. She also contributed to global AI communities, serving as EMEA lead for the Worldwide Machine Learning community and advising startups within the Microsoft for Startups ecosystem.

Joana began her career in research, including roles at the European Space Agency and a Marie Curie Fellowship. Her work in astrophysics led to multiple peer-reviewed publications and international collaborations. She holds a PhD in Astrophysics from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Magna Cum Laude) and a degree in Physics from the University of Lisbon.
