Jared Genser

Jared Genser

Jared Genser has been an international human rights lawyer for more than two decades. He is Managing Director of Perseus Strategies, a public interest law firm, Co-Founder, Board Member, and outside General Counsel to the Neurorights Foundation, a member of the Advisory Board to the Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights at Harvard University where he was previously a Senior Tech Fellow, and a member of the Expert Advisory Group to the joint INTERPOL-UNODC project on Neurotechnology, Law Enforcement, and Criminal Justice: Uses, Risks, and Human Rights Safeguards.

He was previously a partner at the global law firm DLA Piper LLP, a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, and Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (2020-2025).

Referred to by the New York Times as “The Extractor” for his work freeing political prisoners worldwide, Genser has served as counsel to such luminaries as former Czech Republic President Václav Havel, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Ales Bialiatski, Desmond Tutu, and Elie Wiesel. He has taught as adjunct faculty at Stanford Law School, Georgetown University Law Center, University of Pennsylvania Law School, and University of Michigan Law School.

He holds a B.S. from Cornell University, an M.P.P. from Harvard University, and a J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School. His newest book is a co-edited volume with former UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein entitled The Oxford Handbook on the UN Human Rights System (Oxford University Press, 2026). His next co-edited book is The Cambridge Handbook of Neurotechnology Governance: Legal and Ethical Frontiers (Cambridge University Press, 2027).

Genser received the American Bar Association’s International Human Rights Award and Tällberg Eliasson Global Leadership Prize and is an elected member of both the American Law Institute and Council on Foreign Relations.
