David Feng

David Feng is Senior Director of Scientific Computing at the Allen Institute in Seattle, Washington, where he leads teams responsible for data and metadata infrastructure, data engineering, and data science. He holds a Ph.D. in Scientific Data Visualization from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and dual B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from Northwestern University. Before returning to the Allen Institute in his current role, he served as Director of Product Management at Tableau Software, bringing a strong product and user-focused perspective to scientific data delivery.

David has been a central contributor to several landmark neuroscience data resources, including the Allen Human Brain Atlas, the Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas, the Cell Types Database, and the Brain Observatory. His work has spanned data analysis pipelines, web portal development, visualization design, and user support — with a consistent emphasis on making large-scale data accessible and usable for the broader research community. His contributions have appeared in high-profile publications in Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and eLife, among others.

In his current role overseeing the Allen Institute for Neural Dynamics’ scientific computing function, David ensures that data acquired from high-throughput pipelines is processed and shared both rapidly and reproducibly. Looking ahead, he is focused on harnessing advances in artificial intelligence to lower the barriers between complex neuroscience datasets and the researchers who depend on them, making rich scientific data more discoverable, interpretable, and impactful than ever before.
