Access to quality data is the fundamental prerequisite for effective AI, yet for researchers in under-resourced institutions, open does not mean accessible. Discoverability friction, format complexity, and technical overhead continue to obscure what should be visible. Bridging this gap is key to unlocking data’s full potential for people and planet. This session unpacks the full open data value chain, bringing together data providers, researchers, and technologists to ask: How might we close the distance between availability and usability? We will explore how open data serves as foundational infrastructure for AI tools aligned with global goals, and demonstrate how emerging interoperability standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) are accelerating the path from raw data to real-world impact.
