Caroline Gevaert

Caroline Gevaert is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente (the Netherlands). Her research focuses on the use of satellite and drone imagery and machine learning to support development projects in Lower-Middle Income Countries. Her Ph.D. dissertation on mapping informal settlements with drones was awarded a Cum Laude distinction and won the NCG J.M. Tienstra Research Prize. More recently, she has been awarded a prestigious personal research grant (VENI) from the Dutch Research Council to investigate how to make AI in geospatial workflows fair and explainable, and starting 2022 she is a member of the Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Caroline also works as an international consultant for the World Bank as a Remote Sensing and Machine Learning Specialist.
