Carlos Madjri Sanvee

Carlos Madjri Sanvee (Togo) is Secretary General of the World YMCA (World Alliance of YMCAs), the largest and oldest youth-focused movement in the world, reaching more than 65 million people across 120 countries and territories. Elected in 2018, he became the first African to serve in this role.

Carlos has dedicated more than five decades to the YMCA Movement, beginning as a teenage volunteer in Togo before advancing through local, national, and international leadership positions. Since becoming Secretary General in 2019, he has led the organization through significant transformation, including the global response to COVID-19, the launch of the YMCA COVID Solidarity Fund, and the creation of the Youth-Led Solutions Initiative, which empowers young people to design and implement solutions to challenges in their communities.

A strong advocate for youth leadership and cross-sector collaboration, Carlos has helped forge partnerships with governments, civil society, the private sector, the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the Big Six youth organizations. He played a key role in launching the Global Youth Mobilization, enabling young people worldwide to lead community action and recovery efforts.

Carlos also spearheaded the development of YMCA Vision 2030, the movement’s global strategy focused on four impact pillars: Community Wellbeing, Meaningful Work, Sustainable Planet, and Just World. His current priority is accelerating the implementation of Vision 2030 and advancing innovative, youth-led solutions that contribute to a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future.
