Amal Kasry

Amal Kasry is Chief of Basic Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation in the Sciences Sector at UNESCO, where she leads global programmes in basic sciences and engineering capacity development. She has designed and delivered flagship international initiatives, including the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024–2033) and major UN observances such as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development and the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. She designed and launched the Remote Access to Laboratory Equipment initiative (UNESRALE) for Global South, and produced high-impact policy tools such as Quantum Science for Inclusion and Sustainability and the Synchrotron Science Toolkit.

Prior to UNESCO, Dr. Kasry was an internationally recognized materials scientist and nanobiotechnology researcher with experience spanning academia and industry across Germany, the USA, the UK, Austria, Singapore, and Egypt. She held positions at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, Cardiff University (with GE Healthcare), and the Austrian Institute of Technology. She later directed the Nanotechnology Research Centre at the British University in Egypt, where she established its research services system and led nationally funded innovation projects.

Dr. Kasry holds a PhD in Materials Science from the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research and Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz. She has authored more than 60 publications, including high-impact papers in ACS Nano, Applied Physics Letters, and Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, as well as multiple patents in graphene and biosensing technologies. Her work bridges frontier science, innovation, and science policy, with a strong commitment to advancing scientific capacity and inclusion globally.
