Harnessing AI for a Sustainable Future at COP29: AI for Climate Action Innovation Factory and AI/ML in 5G Challenge

As the impacts of climate change grow increasingly urgent, AI is emerging as a powerful tool in the global effort to combat environmental challenges. During a side event at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, two major initiatives – the AI for Climate Action Innovation Factory and the ITU AI/ML in 5G Smart Energy Supply Scheduling for Green Telecom Challenge – highlighted innovative uses of AI to advance sustainability, resilience, and resource efficiency. During a dedicated session showcasing the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) broader Green Digital Action efforts, award ceremonies were held for each initiative, highlighting digital solutions that support international climate goals.
The awards were presented by Tomas Lamanauskas, ITU’s Deputy Secretary-General, Bilel Jamoussi, Deputy Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, ITU, and Dazheng Guo, President of Huawei’s Global Technical Services R&D.
AI-Powered Solutions for Climate Action
The AI for Climate Action Innovation Factory supports startups developing pioneering technologies to address pressing climate issues. In early October 2024, ten outstanding finalists – GridGyan AI, LUKU-CHAP, OptiCloud, ai4seas, ECOPLANTAI, Oddbot, Green-Leaf-AI, eAgro, Gaia-AI, and AGRICOM – were recognized for their innovative applications of AI in tackling challenges such as emission reduction, renewable energy optimization, climate impact monitoring, and sustainable agriculture. The competition culminated with an award ceremony at a COP29 side event, where the finalists’ contributions and the themes of the Innovation Factory were celebrated as part of the conference’s commitment to advancing AI-driven climate action.
Among the finalists, OptiCloud, a startup dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of cloud computing by tackling the growing issue of digital waste in data centers, emerged as the winner, and CEO Vijay Karia was invited on stage to present OptiCloud’s solution.
OptiCloud’s approach stands out for its focus on transforming cloud storage efficiency. The company’s AI-powered platform identifies inefficiencies in cloud storage – such as unused data, oversized servers, and redundant information – that contribute to excessive energy consumption and carbon emissions. Rather than building new data centers to meet the rising demand, OptiCloud enables organizations to optimize their existing infrastructure, helping businesses reduce operational costs by up to 60% while significantly lowering their carbon footprint.
OptiCloud’s technology has already demonstrated impressive results, achieving a 30% reduction in carbon emissions and over $1 million in annual savings for a healthcare client. The platform’s autonomous AI agents not only identify digital waste but also actively remove it, aligning with 12 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including clean energy, responsible consumption, and climate action. By creating a carbon marketplace where digital waste can be recycled via carbon credits, OptiCloud further supports initiatives such as reforestation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development projects, reinforcing its commitment to balancing the digital and physical worlds.
This recognition at COP29 not only highlights OptiCloud’s potential to address climate challenges but also serves as a model for how technology can be harnessed for sustainable impact on a global scale. OptiCloud exemplifies the power of innovation in transforming climate action, showcasing the vital role of AI in building a more resilient and sustainable world.
Smart Energy Supply Scheduling for Green Telecom
In addition to the AI for Climate Action Innovation Factory, COP29 also hosted the ITU AI/ML in 5G Challenge 2024 on the theme of Smart Energy Supply Scheduling for Green Telecom. This challenge addressed the pressing need to optimize energy consumption in mobile networks, which are powered by various energy sources, including traditional electricity grids, solar panels, and diesel generators. To reduce energy costs while maintaining network stability, participants were tasked with developing machine learning models capable of predicting daily solar energy generation and creating strategies to efficiently utilize diverse energy sources.
Over two months, more than 700 teams enrolled in the competition, contributing innovative solutions to this complex problem. The first prize was awarded to Saket Kunwar and his team, makai_bari, who presented their winning solution during a COP29 session. Their machine learning model stood out for its ability to optimize energy sources, reduce emissions, and ensure stable power for mobile networks. Other awarded teams included KhlifiMohamed (second prize), Saifdaoud (third prize), KpatouXavier (fourth prize), and spekole (fifth prize), as well as Yisakberhanu for Best Student, Aspirin for Most Creative, and Krishna_Priya for Best Presentation.
Advancing AI for a Greener Tomorrow
The AI for Climate Action Innovation Factory and the AI/ML in 5G Challenge at COP29 have underscored the critical role of AI in addressing the complexities of climate change. By fostering a new generation of startups and innovators dedicated to sustainability, ITU’s initiatives have opened pathways for technologies that support emission reductions, optimize renewable energy, strengthen resilience, and enable responsible consumption. OptiCloud’s achievement as the Innovation Factory winner and makai_bari’s success in the AI/ML in 5G Challenge highlight how focused innovation can drive impactful change, encouraging other tech innovators to prioritize climate-friendly practices in digital spaces.
