Álvaro Moreno-Martínez

Álvaro Moreno-Martínez

Álvaro Moreno-Martínez earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Valencia in 2014 and has been deeply involved in using remote sensing data and machine learning methods since starting his research career in 2007. He initially worked on developing Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) globally. During his Ph.D., he focused on estimating vegetation photosynthesis using advanced methods. After earning his degree, he joined the Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group (NTSG) in the United States. There, he worked on improving NASA’s MODIS algorithms to assess global vegetation carbon and water fluxes. He also led projects that focused on creating maps of key plant traits and collaborated on initiatives to monitor large-scale water and carbon fluxes at scale.

Since 2018, Dr. Moreno has been a senior researcher at the University of Valencia (UV) in the ISP (Image & Signal Processing Group), contributing significantly to high-impact publications through various European projects. Currently, as a distinguished researcher at the UV, he is advancing remote sensing products to monitor ecosystems more effectively using different machine learning techniques. Dr. Moreno is a member of the Ellis network and a recognized Google Developer Expert in Earth Engine. He also participates in the CEOS Land Product Validation (LPV) subgroup, which coordinates the quantitative validation of state-of-the-art satellite-derived data products.
