AI has made recall and writing cheap. Higher education can no longer justify its value by assessing who can produce an answer on demand. In a world where students carry a “second brain,” the core question becomes: what remains worth paying for? This session argues that universities stay relevant only if they shift the unit of value from output to judgment. The priority is helping learners make defensible decisions, show proof, and take accountability while using AI as a tool, not a replacement for thinking. I will outline futures for higher education: credential factory, human development, or networked learning ecosystems, and explain why assessment design will determine which future wins.
