As artificial intelligence reshapes economies and labour markets worldwide, digital and AI skills have become essential foundations for inclusive and sustainable development. Yet the true measure of success is not the number of people trained, but the opportunities created through those skills: employment, entrepreneurship, productivity gains, and improved livelihoods.

Convened under the co-design process of the ITU AI Skills Coalition Strategy 2026-2030 and co-hosted by ITU and Microsoft, this side event brings together governments, international organizations, industry leaders, and development partners to explore how skills development can be more effectively linked to real economic opportunity. The discussion will highlight practical approaches to aligning AI learning pathways with labour market demand, strengthening national AI skills ecosystems, and scaling successful models through multi-stakeholder partnerships.

Through country and partner-led experiences from across the globe, participants will examine how AI skills initiatives can move beyond training targets to deliver measurable outcomes for individuals, businesses, and societies. The discussion will contribute to the next phase of the AI Skills Coalition’s strategy, supporting countries in developing and implementing national AI skills strategies that connect certification, workforce development, and economic opportunity and sharing best practices on scaling AI skills development for impact with the key focus of strengthening country institutional capacities and connecting AI skilling programs to local context.
