Welcome to this special workshop series jointly organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ). The series focuses on bringing cutting-edge technologies closer to practitioners and researchers, while fostering collaboration that enables us to collectively leapfrog toward the next generation of communication technologies. This partnership promotes regional technical leadership and strengthens opportunities for industry and academia in Zimbabwe to engage in standards development and innovation.

In this workshop, participants will explore the opportunities available for African researchers to experiment, analyze data, train AI models, and develop end-to-end AI-driven innovations through the ITU AI for Good Sandbox. Ongoing projects will be presented as practical examples. The session will outline the steps for onboarding academia, startups, and research institutions to the Sandbox and explain downstream benefits including publication opportunities, challenge prizes, standards contributions, and leadership pathways. Participants will also gain access to ITU trainings, local events, open datasets, pre-trained models, and open-source code repositories as part of this initiative.

Looking ahead to 2026, the workshop will provide guidance on how individuals and institutions can participate in this collaboration, leverage ITU resources to advance their work, and pursue opportunities such as international prizes, scholarships, and research partnerships. Join the discussion on how Africa can shape the future of AI-enabled communication networks through practical engagement and collaboration.
