Xuan Li

Xuan Li is a Chinese director and visual storyteller known for creating some of the most widely viewed and culturally influential music videos in China. Her work explores the intersection of music, technology, and humanity, with a focus on emotionally driven storytelling rather than visual spectacle. Through music-led narratives, she explores how emerging technologies — including virtual production, immersive experiences, and AI — can become mediums for empathy, warmth, and human connection, while also rethinking more sustainable approaches to contemporary film production.

Her felt-animation music film The Star Shepherd, inspired by UNICEF ambassador Roy Wang’s visit to Malawi, explores themes of love, loneliness, and compassion through a handcrafted visual language she describes as “Felt Realism.” The project has received international recognition from the Anthem Awards, Shorty Impact Awards, ADC Awards, and Clio Music Awards, and was featured in STASH’s Permanent Collection, where it was described as “a new benchmark for directing in the age of AI.”
