Nana Obayashi

Nana Obayashi is a robotics doctoral candidate in the CREATE Lab at EPFL’s Institute of Mechanical Engineering. She undertook her undergraduate and master’s studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology in aerospace engineering, specializing in computational fluid dynamics. Following this, she worked in the aerospace and automotive industries as an aerodynamics and vehicle performance engineer. Her PhD focuses on the data-driven design and optimization of robots that leverage soft body-fluid interactions. This includes the development of bio-inspired soft robots, large-scale automated robotic setups, and utilizing experimental fluid analysis for applications focused on sustainability and scientific discovery. Her work has been published in journals including Nature Scientific Reports and Soft Robotics, and she has received awards such as the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. She serves as a student representative on the IEEE Technical Committee for Soft Robotics and has led numerous initiatives to promote the democratization of the field, including authoring a Science Robotics article on the topic.
