Myung-Joon Kim

Dr. KIM, Myung Joon has 45 years of R&D experience in Information and Communication Technology(ICT) area, e.g. computer software engineering, technology strategy and management, international standardization, and global R&D collaboration.

Dr. Kim is currently the president of Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute(ETRI), Daejeon, Korea. As the president of ETRI, he is responsible for managing Korea ICT R&D including areas such as Artificial Intelligence(AI), High Performance Computing, Network Infrastructure, New Media, Security, and ICT Parts and Materials.  He has been focusing on AI oriented ICT convergence with Safety, Smart City, Energy and Healthcare areas which will let Korea lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.

Dr. KIM graduated from Université Nancy I (France) with a Ph.D. degree in 1986, from KAIST(Republic of Korea) with Master degree in 1980 and from Seoul National University with B.S. degree in 1978, all in Computer Science.

He began his career at LORIA(INRIA Lorrain) for five years where his research activities were in Software Engineering.  Then he joined ETRI in 1986, where he served in numerous positions including, Section Head, Director and the Senior Vice President, leading Software & Contents Laboratory, researching System Software including Database, File system and Operation System for more than 30 years.

Since 2016, Dr. Kim worked for the national Software Policy & Research Institute (SPRI) as the president for 3 years, in charge of ICT national policy research especially in the area of Software Technology and Industries.

In his professional career, Dr. Kim has pro-actively participated in various international activities.  He was a Board Member of Linux Foundation since 2013 for 2 years and he is a Life-time Member of ACM(Association for Computing Machinery) since 2005.  And he also served the president of KIISE(Korea Institute of Information Science and Engineering) in the year 2012.
