Malik Afegbua is a multi award-winning Nigerian filmmaker, contemporary artist, designer, and creative technologist recognized globally for pioneering work at the intersection of storytelling, culture, and technology. Ranked among the top five AI artists in Africa, he is widely regarded as one of the continent’s leading voices shaping the future of creativity, innovation, and cultural expression.
As a visionary entrepreneur, Malik is the Founder and CEO of Slickcity Media, as well as Executive Director of CELS AFRICA, where he leads groundbreaking projects that merge African futurism, artificial intelligence, and immersive media to reclaim and reimagine African narratives. Deepening his commitment to technological advancement and education, he is also the Co-founder of the AACIS Academy for Arts, Culture and Intelligent Systems, an institution dedicated to training new cohorts in AI and digital storytelling. Across these initiatives, Malik and his teams have trained over 5,000 people through a combination of physical workshops and virtual learning experiences, expanding access to emerging technologies across diverse communities.
Malik’s acclaimed project, The Elder Series, has been transformative in shifting global perceptions of ageing and representation. The series has earned features across major international platforms and institutions and has been recognized for its ethical, creative, and cultural impact. Notably, it earned him a World Health Organization (WHO) Game Changer Award for innovation in visibility and empowerment of older adults. Through this work, Malik demonstrates that age is a platform for inspiration, storytelling, and cultural influence.
In his artistic practice, Malik seamlessly integrates film, fashion, and technology, blending African heritage with futurism. He actively works to correct bias within the AI and digital space, ensuring that technology reflects diverse perspectives and lived experiences. His work has become the subject of numerous academic studies, and his insights are frequently featured in art and scholarly publications, with students citing his approaches in final-year projects worldwide.
