Karolina Zieba-Kulawik

Dr. Karolina Zieba-Kulawik is a Research Associate at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) in Luxembourg, where she contributes to the Artificial Intelligence working group in the Urban Development and Mobility Department. She is also an affiliated member of the Polish Geographical Society, Branch of Remote Sensing. Karolina holds a background in landscape architecture, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Airborne and Terrestrial Laser Scanning, having studied in Krakow (Poland) and Vienna (Austria). She completed her doctorate in urban forestry and geoinformatics. 

Karolina’s research focuses on the application of new technologies in urban environmental studies, with a strong emphasis on remote sensing, 3D LiDAR technology, and AI tools. Her work includes analyzing the dynamics of cityscape changes, defining landscape metrics, examining the 3D structure of urban forms, exploring aspects of property markets, and assessing ecosystem services provided by urban trees. She is actively involved in monitoring land availability and consumption for housing, a project commissioned by the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning in Luxembourg. 

Karolina has participated in international projects, including Land Information for Land Management (in collaboration with TU Wien, BOKU Wien, University of Ljubljana, University of Agriculture in Krakow, and universities in Ethiopia), iTre-es and GeoCentre of Excellence (Poland), and commissioned research for State Forests and National Parks in Poland. She also contributed to the SusDens project (Luxembourg-Belgium) and is a co-author of the handbook commissioned by Polish Space Agency: Satellite Data for Public Administration“.
