Isaac Gachugu

A committed leader in M-PESA Technology and Product Development at Safaricom (Kenya), leading the innovation arm of M-PESA – the global leader in mobile money and recently co-leading the Payments Tribe as the Tribe Tech Lead.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Services Officer, Isaac owns the delivery responsibility in ensuring M-PESA becomes the key to transforming lives of the many Kenyans who use M-PESA daily for both money transfer and payments. This puts financial inclusion and social transformation at the heart of every initiative carried out by the M-PESA Product Development department. Use of M-PESA for low to mid value payments has seen a rapid growth in the electronic payments in Kenya opening up businesses to cashless distribution models and steering innovation in E&M-Commerce.

Isaac has been offering leadership in API and Digital strategy for M-PESA since July 2015 powering internal and external digital innovation in the payments space. This has been critical in creating exponential growth in mobile payments and dependent innovation including international money transfer and business to business transactions. He was part of the team that coined the now famous Fuliza service which became the first mobile overdraft facility in the world and a hit in Kenya. He also represents Financial Services Division in the Crisis Management Team at Safaricom which is charged with ensuring business continuity and overall crisis management.

Isaac is a holder of Bachelors (Bsc) and Masters (Msc) degrees in Computer Science from the University of Nairobi, a Masters Certificate in Business Analysis from George Washington University and a Micro Masters Degree in Digital Product Management by Boston University on EDX platform. He is also a Prince2 Project Management Practitioner among other professional qualifications. In the year 2012, he published a thesis on Architecture for Cloud-Based Rapid Application Development Framework which has since been published by Lambert Publishers. He has also been contributing to Stack Overflow and other technology based community sites. He was nominated as the ICT performer of the year 2008 at KTDA for leading digital initiatives for KTDA managed factories.
