Guy Ryder

Mr. Guy Ryder brings 30 years of experience across trade unions and the multilateral system to his current role as Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG) at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

He chairs the Taskforce for the UN80 Initiative, the Secretary-General’s system-wide reform agenda to strengthen the UN as it marks its 80th anniversary. In this capacity, he has advanced efforts to enhance institutional efficiency, review the mandate cycle, and drive structural reforms and programme realignments to improve delivery and impact. Mr. Ryder also leads the follow-up on the Pact for the Future, adopted by consensus in September 2024 to enhance multilateralism. He oversees coherence in policy analysis and supports system-wide coordination, including the implementation of the Secretary-General’s “Call to Action for Human Rights.” He chairs the Deputies Committee, oversees the secretariat to the Executive Committee and the Senior Management Group, and coordinates matters related to the Chief Executives Board.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Ryder served as Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva for two consecutive terms beginning in October 2012. Earlier in his career, he was elected General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in 2006. His work at the ILO began in 1998 as Director of the Bureau for Workers’ Activities, followed by his role as Director of the Office of the Director-General in 1999.

Mr. Ryder holds a degree in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge and he studied at the School of Latin American Studies at the University of Liverpool.
