Figen Ulgen

Figen Ulgen is the Group Chief Data and AI Officer for Dai-ichi Life Group, based in Tokyo, Japan, where she leads the group-wide AI and data strategy across governance, innovation, and AI driven enterprise transformation. In this role, Figen is responsible for shaping responsible AI frameworks, driving data and AI-driven value creation, and embedding AI capabilities across a global financial services organization.

A long-standing AI practitioner with deep technical foundations, Figen began working in artificial intelligence through her doctoral research on neural network training algorithms. This technical grounding is complemented by extensive industry experience spanning applied AI, data platforms, and large-scale digital transformation. Figen holds multiple patents and brings a practitioner’s perspective to both strategy and execution.

Prior to joining Dai-ichi Life Group, Figen held senior leadership roles at LINE, Woolworths, Microsoft, Intel, and McKinsey & Company, applying AI and data science across consumer technology, FMCG, enterprise platforms, semiconductors, and management consulting.

In addition to executive responsibilities, Figen serves as an External Director on the Board of a Prime-listed company in Japan, contributing expertise in AI, technology governance, and long-term value creation. Figen’s work is driven by a focus on building trustworthy, scalable AI that delivers meaningful business and societal impact.
