Cindy Smith

Dr. Cindy Smith brings experience and action as the UNICRI director. Before her appointment she served as the Senior Coordinator of Programs to Combat Trafficking in Persons in the US Department of State. Prior to this position, she served as the Lead Foreign Affairs Officer in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement. From 2006-2008, Dr. Smith served as the Chief of the International Center of the National Institute of Justice in the US Department of Justice, directing all international research with a special emphasis on terrorism. Previously Dr. Smith served as a Fulbright Senior Researcher in Turkey where she researched trafficking in persons. In addition to her numerous career highlights, she has taught Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University level for 15 years. Professor Smith received her Doctorate of Philosophy in Social Ecology from the University of California Irvine, a Master of Science in Education Administration from the National University, Irvine and a Master of Science in Justice from the American University in Washington D.C.
