Christian Igel

Christian is a professor at DIKU, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen. He completed his studies in Computer Science at the Technical University of Dortmund. In 2002, he earned his Doctoral degree from the Faculty of Technology at Bielefeld University, and in 2010, his Habilitation from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Sciences at Ruhr-University Bochum. From 2003 to 2010, Christian held a Juniorprofessor position for Optimization of Adaptive Systems at the Institut für Neuroinformatik at Ruhr-University Bochum. In October 2010, he became a professor with special duties in machine learning at DIKU and has been a full professor there since December 2014. Christian is also the director of the SCIENCE AI Centre, a co-lead of the Pioneer Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Denmark, and a Fellow of ELLIS (European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems). He serves as an Editor for the German Journal on Artificial Intelligence (KI) and is an Associate Editor for both the Evolutionary Computation Journal (ECJ) and the Artificial Intelligence Journal (AIJ). His research area is machine learning, with particular emphasis on kernel methods, multi-objective optimization, reinforcement learning, PAC-Bayesian analysis of ensemble methods, and deep neural networks, as well as the applications of machine learning aimed at achieving the sustainable development goals.
