Bret Jordan

Bret is currently the Chief Security Strategist and Head of International Standards at Afero and Working Party 2 Chair at the UN’s ITU-T Study Group 17, where he leads standardization efforts around the security of network architecture, internet of Things (IoT), digital twins, metaverse, intelligent transport systems (ITS), and connected autonomous vehicles (CAV). In addition, Bret is Co-President of OSTERA and an Adjunct Professor, teaching courses at the Masters level. His past work experience includes CTO of Emerging Technologies for Broadcom and various CTO leadership positions at Symantec, Blue Coat Systems, and Solera Networks. Bret holds a Masters degree in Cybersecurity.

For over 35 years Bret has led cybersecurity efforts and held many leadership roles in large global enterprise companies, startups, nonprofits, and academic institutions. He started his career as Director of Networking at the University of Utah where he helped design, develop, and deploy the first wide scale decentralized 802.1X network. This inter-University authentication system and its accompanying white paper would later inspire the creators of EduRoam, who were looking to solve the same set of problems.

Since then he has participated in over 9 different international standards organizations; led several international standards efforts, including STIX, TAXII, CACAO, OpenC2, JSS, and JCS; presented numerous times at RSAC, ISC2 Security Congress, FS-ISAC, ITU, FIRST, ETSI TC-Cyber, EU CRA, CES, ENISA, and other industry specific conferences; and provided thought leadership and guidance to many organizations as a member of their Board of Directors.

Bret has extensive experience collaborating with government agencies, critical infrastructure, industry thought leaders, and academic researchers from around the world in driving creative new ideas, technologies, and solutions that will have material impact on protecting systems and data crucial to our way of life.

His current research projects include embodied AI, integration of AI into cyber defense, the use of AI in IoT and the Hyperconnected Edge, and the impacts of AI on upcoming technology, cybersecurity, privacy, and society. He enjoys cooking, skiing, solving hard problems, building new things, and helping design solutions that can change the world.
