Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral

Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral is the 11th Director-General of ICCROM and the first woman to be appointed to this role. She began her mandate in January 2024.

Director-General Gujral is a dynamic, innovative and committed Thought Leader with over 22 years of experience in the public and international development sectors. Of Italo-Indian origin, she has more than 18 years of experience at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), where she successfully led processes of significant transformation and promoted innovation, efficiency, and impact at scale. During her career at FAO, she held leadership roles in more than twenty countries across three regions, serving at national, subregional, regional, and headquarters levels.

She has solid expertise in complex programme development and management, as well as in strategic planning and programming, governance and policy. She also brings extensive experience in resource mobilization and in building multi-stakeholder partnerships and coalitions, working closely with governments and partner organizations. In addition, she has in-depth knowledge of designing global, regional, and national strategies and policies, bringing a unique set of skills aimed at improving the underpinning organizational business model towards a more integrated programmatic, ‘whole-of-organization’ approach.

Previously, she served as Multilateral Cooperation Policy Advisor/Donor Relations and Project Analyst at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; as Policy Advisor and Project Analyst at the Society for International Development (SID); as Project Designer Microcredit Specialist at the University of Trieste and Friuli Venezia Giulia Region; and as Assistant Professor in International Development Cooperation at the same university. At the beginning of her career, she also worked as Curator and Coordinator of collections and exhibitions at the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris.
