Breakthrough session will explore how AI solutions can shed light on environmentally destructive practices as well as protect our world. The goal of this session is to take urgent action in combatting climate change, to identify solutions to sustainably use our planet’s resources, and to re-imagine the future of earth with AI.

    Alexandra (Sasha) Luccioni is a Postdoctoral Researcher working on AI for Humanity initiatives at Mila - Quebec AI Institute, under the supervision of Yoshua Bengio. She obtained her PhD in Cognitive Computing from UQÀM in 2018 and spent two years working in applied ML, specifically in applying deep learning and NLP to different industrial applications. She is highly involved in community initiatives, serving on the Research and Policy Committee of Women in Machine Learning (WiML) and on the Advisory board of Kids Code Jeunesse.

    Andrew Zolli is the VP of Global Impact at Planet, an space and AI-driven organization known for having deployed the largest constellation of Earth-observing satellites in history. These satellites image the entire surface of the Earth, every day, at 3m/pixel resolution. Andrew works to ensure Planet's data and capabilities are used to deliver breakthrough sustainable development, climate, public health, humanitarian, and human rights outcomes. He also helps the company design and implement data and AI-related ethics policies and programs. Beyond Planet, Andrew works broadly on issues of foresight, innovation, and systemic and social resilience.

My strengths are public speaking, team building, and strategic planning, which flow from my background in science, engineering, and public policy. At XPRIZE I work on all things energy, environment, and climate, including the $20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, a global competition to recycle CO2 into valuable products as way to decarbonize our economy and avoid dangerous climate change.
