[Invitation only] The impact of AI on developing young minds: A policy roadmap to prioritizing children’s needs

    1h 30 minutes

The rapid adoption of Anthropomorphic AI, or human-like AI, in the form of AI companions and social chatbots is posing serious concerns for children’s emotional, social and intellectual life skills development. Today, 1 in 3 American teens find conversations with AI companions and chatbots to be ‘as satisfying or more satisfying’ than those with real-life friends, and 2 in 5 young Brits have no concern following advice from these chatbots, and tragic cases of families losing children to suicide after engaging with these machines.

This lunch aims to shed light on the harms Anthropomorphic AI poses to children’s developmental needs, how certain design features in these products are encouraging emotional dependency and what policymakers and product developers can do to safeguard children’s humanity.
