This talk presents an overview of Prof. Tommaso Melodia’s work laying the basic architectural and algorithmic principles for new approaches to design open, programmable, AI-powered, and virtualized next-generation cellular networks. It discusses architectural aspects, automation principles, and algorithmic frameworks enabling orchestration and management of intelligence, as well as coexistence between AI and RAN on a shared computed infrastructure. It also focuses on intent-driven orchestration and network control through rApps, xApps, and dApps operating at multiple time scales on the radio access network, with a focus on mitigation of conflicts arising from multiple Apps attempting to control correlated functionalities and on explainability of the resulting network behavior.
