The AI for Good Lab is an initiative designed to help countries move from AI strategy and readiness assessments to the practical deployment of AI solutions that address national development priorities. The Lab provides a collaborative platform that brings together government, academia, industry, startups, civil society, and development partners to strengthen national AI ecosystems through three interconnected pillars: AI Readiness and Policy, AI Skills Development, and Public AI Infrastructure. Through these pillars, the Lab supports countries in assessing AI readiness gaps, building national AI talent, and establishing standards-based AI Sandbox environment that enable the development, testing, validation, reuse and scaling of locally relevant AI solutions.

As countries increasingly seek to harness AI for economic growth, public service delivery, innovation, and sustainable development, many face challenges related to limited AI skills, fragmented innovation ecosystems, insufficient compute and data resources, and gaps in policy and governance frameworks.

The AI for Good Lab provides a structured approach to address these challenges by combining capacity development, technical assistance, adoption of international standards, and setting up an interoperable public AI infrastructure. This workshop therefore serves as a platform for stakeholders to understand how countries can benefit from the AI for Good Lab and work towards defining a roadmap for engaging with the ITU AI for Good Lab activities to accelerate responsible and inclusive AI adoption.

The main objectives of the workshop will be to:

      • Introduce the AI for Good Lab framework and its three pillars: AI Readiness and Policy, AI Skills Development and Public AI Infrastructure (AI Sandbox)
      • Explore how the AI for Good Lab can support implementation of national AI strategies
      • Explore approaches for scaling AI skills development and strengthening national AI ecosystems.
      • Discuss the role of the AI Sandbox as public AI infrastructure to support experimentation, innovation, and deployment of locally relevant AI solutions

Expected takeaways from attending the workshop will be:

      • Shared understanding of the AI for Good Lab framework and implementation approach.
      • Assessment of AI skills development priorities and capacity-building needs.
      • Provide a good understanding of public AI infrastructure and AI Sandbox requirements.
      • Provide detailed explanation on stakeholder engagement mechanisms and next steps for implementation.
