Earth system models rely on the fundamental resources of data and computational power to produce high-fidelity simulations. The talk will begin by reviewing recent progress in data-driven atmospheric modelling before examining areas where advances are being constrained by limited resources. It will argue that physics-based models and AI approaches are naturally complementary: AI methods are inherently faster on modern hardware, while physics-based models require less data.
