Child agency in the age of AI

The dominant narrative around AI and children casts young people as passive recipients of a technology they did not design and cannot influence – a generation taught to cope with AI rather than shape it.

This talk reframes the question: rather than asking how AI should be applied to children, we should ask what it takes to place children’s agency at the center of the systems we are building.

This presentation shares a set of design principles that prioritize the agency, wellbeing, development, and social needs of children. The choices made now by governments, multilateral institutions, industry, and civil society will determine whether the next generation inherits AI systems that diminish them or ones built to honor their curiosity, their voice, and their capacity to build.
