More than 130,000 people are officially registered as disappeared in Mexico. Behind every number is a family waiting for answers. Yet forensic institutions still rely on slow and largely manual processes to review thousands of photographs and unresolved cases.

Can AI help accelerate identification while reducing the emotional burden on both forensic personnel and families?
identIA is an AI-powered tool designed to support human identification at scale. Already field-tested in Mexico, it recognizes and compares tattoos and other distinguishing features across forensic photographic archives, helping experts focus their work and bringing new possibilities to one of the world’s largest disappearance crises.

This session will share lessons from deploying AI in a highly sensitive humanitarian context and discuss how technology can help bring answers—and names—back to families.
